Match Report

1/10/10

Newmarket Town Res.
Ransomes Sports

On a very wet pitch Newmarket entertained an experienced Ransomes side in the 3rd Round of the Suffolk Senior Cup, the opening exchanges were fairly even but the home side went ahead through man of the match Felgate. Although the rain had finally stopped, timing of tackles were going to be crucial as Wes Boatright found out after 25 minutes of the game, players from both sides were fully comitted into the tackle, but even though a yellow card would have been harsh even the visitors felt a red card was not needed.

Newmarket struggled to defend for the remainder of the half not for being down to 10 players but just defending badly and went into the break 1 down. Johnson came on at half time and Newmarket reverted to four at the back. Gallagher had an eventful game hitting the post, the bar, scoring and for some reason being booked before the second half started for something he said to the ref without moving his lips. Even with 10 men the home side proved too strong, Skipper O'leary was outstanding pushing his side on. Fresh legs were thrown on by the home side and Keighley was involved in both goals setting up Smith for his second goal in as many games and Keighley scoring the fourth himself.

Eaton Socon

The Ressies went with a depleted squad due to holidays and injuries and knew it would be tough as it always is away to Eaton Socon. Things didnt get any easier with Gilkes pulling a muscle in the warm up but played until half time, we defended well against lively forwards but the defence marshalled by Felgate held out at half time.

Under 18 star Des Ford went on and we knew that whoever scored first would probably go on to win. Bates drove a low cross for Ford to finish from close range early in the second half, Socon threw on all 3 subs and pushed players forward at every opportunity, the experienced O'Leary and lively Pugsy kept us ticking in the middle of the park. Again Bates drove another low cross and this time Harris bundled the ball in for all 3 points. Although we seem to be able to pick up points away, the next game at home to Lakenheath will be very important.

Newmarket Town Res.
Hardwick

Nkt res entertained newly promoted Hardwick after a good away win to Felixstowe in the suffolk senior cup last saturday. After an even start Wez Boatright give away a needless penalty early in the game, Hardwick proved to be the stronger side all over the pitch and pressed the game to go further ahead, although Tom Bromley had his best game to date for the reserves he could not stop Hardwick taking a 3 nil lead in at half time.

Newmarket improved in the second half and matched Hardwick but the game was over and Nkt never really threatened the visitors goal, with games thick and fast in the early season we hope to have a full squad again as this fixture saw top scorer Crawley out injured and 6 x others either on holiday or unavailible. We look forward to saturday when we can put things right at Eaton Socon
